LABLION vs Epic Beaker AP, Cerner PathNet & CEREBRO

Choosing an anatomic pathology LIS

Labs comparing anatomic pathology systems usually weigh an EHR lab module (Epic Beaker AP or Oracle Health Anatomic Pathology, formerly Cerner PathNet AP), a stand-alone pathology LIS (such as CoPathPlus, PowerPath or NovoPath), and a specimen tracking product (such as Leica CEREBRO). LABLION is an open, vendor-neutral AP LIS: it works with all instruments and software in anatomic pathology without constraints, runs together with the systems you already have and exchanges HL7 with them, and adds barcode specimen tracking, specimen templates, synoptic reporting and digital pathology in one place.

LABLION vs Epic Beaker AP

Epic Beaker AP is the anatomic pathology module of Epic's Beaker LIS and is built on an Epic EHR. LABLION is a stand-alone anatomic pathology LIS that interfaces with Epic, Meditech, Oracle Health and other EHRs over HL7 orders and results. Hospitals that are not moving to Epic, including Meditech sites, can still get barcode specimen tracking, specimen templates and synoptic reporting without replacing their EHR, and Epic sites can run LABLION for bench-level AP workflow.

LABLION vs Cerner PathNet (Oracle Health Anatomic Pathology)

Oracle Health Anatomic Pathology, formerly Cerner Millennium PathNet AP, is part of the Oracle Health lab suite. LABLION has been interfaced with Cerner environments, with specimen templates mapped to Cerner order codes, so the pathology lab can run LABLION for accessioning, grossing, histology tracking and sign-out while orders and final reports flow to and from the EHR.

LABLION and Leica CEREBRO: run together

CEREBRO is Leica Biosystems' specimen identification, tracking and workflow management system. LABLION is an open system: labs that already run CEREBRO, or any other tracking or workflow product, keep it and run it together with LABLION, exchanging HL7 messages so case, block and slide data stays in sync. Labs without one get barcode tracking of containers, cassettes, blocks, slides and delivery folders built into LABLION. After LABLION go-live at Ontario hospitals, specimen near misses fell from about 100 a month to almost zero.

Replacing CoPathPlus, PowerPath or another legacy AP LIS

CoPathPlus and PowerPath, now offered by Clinisys, are long-standing anatomic pathology LIS products. Labs replacing an older AP LIS can move to LABLION in one project: historical cases are migrated from the legacy system, user acceptance testing is run with your own staff, and the lab gains built-in specimen tracking, 400+ ready specimen templates and digital pathology integration at the same time.

Built for touchscreens at every bench

LABLION screens are designed for touchscreens at accessioning, grossing, embedding, sectioning, staining and slide delivery, so each step is a tap and a barcode scan instead of typing. Pathologists sign out with decision-tree diagnostic templates, CAP cancer protocols and automatic CPT and ICD coding, and can review whole slide images from Leica Aperio, Roche Ventana, Philips and Hamamatsu scanners.

Anatomic Pathology LIS FAQ

Common questions from labs comparing LABLION with Epic Beaker AP, Cerner PathNet, Leica CEREBRO and other pathology systems.

Yes. LABLION is a stand-alone anatomic pathology LIS. Hospitals that are not on Epic, or that want a dedicated AP system with built-in specimen tracking, use LABLION and exchange orders and results with the EHR over HL7.

Yes. LABLION has been interfaced with Cerner environments, with specimen templates mapped to Cerner order codes. The pathology lab runs accessioning, grossing, histology tracking and sign-out in LABLION while orders and final reports flow to and from the Oracle Health EHR.

Yes. LABLION is an open system with no constraints on the instruments or software it works with. Labs that run CEREBRO or another tracking or workflow system keep it and run it together with LABLION, exchanging HL7 messages so both stay in sync. Labs that don't have one can use the barcode tracking built into LABLION for containers, cassettes, blocks, slides and delivery folders.

Yes. LABLION interfaces with Meditech for patient, order and result messages, and its specimen templates have been mapped to Meditech codes, so Meditech hospitals get a modern anatomic pathology LIS without changing their EHR.

Yes. LABLION integrates whole slide scanners including Leica Aperio, Roche Ventana DP 200 and DP 600, Philips IntelliSite and Hamamatsu NanoZoomer, and supports remote review and sign-out, AI image analysis for IHC scoring, and images in the pathology report.

Yes. Decision-tree diagnostic templates guide pathologists through complete synoptic reports, LABLION enforces CAP cancer checklists, prompts for biomarker testing, suggests CPT and ICD codes, and brings IHC, FISH, flow cytometry and molecular (PCR, NGS) results into the final report.
